Duilio Ciriani

10th July 2002

It is with deep sorrow that we have to inform friends and associates that our dear colleague Duilio Ciriani died yesterday after a short illness. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his wife Marina and daughter Monica at this very sad time.

Duilio joined Tullow in 1987 as Exploration Manager and brought with him a wealth of international experience from his previous positions in GSI, AGIP and Britoil plc. He immediately brought his knowledge and enthusiasm to bear and was the driving force in setting up the technical department in Tullow. From very modest beginnings Duilio was instrumental in bringing the Company to prominent positions in areas as diverse as Italy, Yemen, Syria, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Many of these ventures form the cornerstone of our current activities throughout the world. Duilio always had a great appreciation for the people and cultures he encountered as he advanced our activities, and over the course of the last fifteen years forged many long standing friendships from all corners of the world. We are justly proud of his many achievements.

Duilio was also a wonderful mentor for all of us. His enthusiasm for new projects was legendary and he would not rest until the latest venture was complete. This great enthusiasm transferred itself to all of those who worked with him. He helped many people in developing their skills in the oil industry, and always remained enthusiastic through good times and bad. We will badly miss his guiding hand.

In recent years, Duilio assumed the role of roving ambassador particularly throughout the subcontinent. He was held in the highest esteem and won many friends for the Company.

We have lost a true professional oilman, a leader and innovator, but most of all we have lost a dear friend. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered, and he is an example to us all as to how life should be lived. May he rest in peace.
