Driving Policy
Land
transport has the potential to be a high risk activity in the oil
and gas industry. During 2006, 17% of the 111 fatalities, across
the 39 organisations who submitted data to OGP arose from driving
or vehicular incidents. Having identified this key root cause of
fatalities, OGP introduced a Land Transport Recommended Practice to
assist the industry manage this risk. In order to ensure
consistency across Tullow in managing this risk, a corporate level
Driving Policy was drawn up in 2006.
This policy gives minimum training standards that all of our drivers must attain, including defensive driving techniques, a list of the correct safety equipment all vehicles must contain, and sets out strict journey management procedures. This policy is a practical example of one of the many ways in which Tullow sets minimum good practice safety standards across the Group, which we believe are a necessary part of our duty of care in achieving high standards in health and safety. In 2006, Tullow employees and contractors travelled almost 2 million km on organisational business. 15 separate vehicle incidents occurred and none resulted in major injury or loss of life.
